COVID-19 Closure Updates for Staff and Families

COVID-19 Reopening Update: Friday, June 19

Hamilton County Schools launched the School Reopening Task Force to plan for the safe reopening of schools for the 2020-2021 school year on August 12. The task force that includes parents, students, community leaders, health professionals, teachers, school administrators, and district leaders will meet regularly over the summer to plan for the safe return to school.Hamilton County Schools will send a weekly communication to update the public on progress of the task force and make sure details are available well in advance of children returning to school.

This week the task force subcommittees met to discuss considerations for specific areas in the reopening plan. The subcommittees are Health and Safety, Operations, Academics, Support for Students, Staff and Parents, and Communications. The subcommittee members are a cross section of the School Reopening Task Force. To view the full list of task force members, click here.

The district received strong participation in our initial reopening survey, and will distribute a more in-depth survey next week to develop a better understanding of parent thoughts, concerns and suggestions regarding the reopening of school. The district plans to reopen on August 12, with expanded virtual options available to families, and this survey will give us more specific information about the structure that works best for teachers, students, and families.

The School Reopening Task Force will share their report with the Hamilton County Board of Education on July 2. The district will continue to provide regular updates leading up to the completion of the reopening plan and share the details of the plan throughout the month of July.

To aid families during the school closure, the district has created the HCS Continued Help Hotline: 423-498-5437. Families can call Monday through Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to speak with a Hamilton County Schools staff member. For our Spanish speaking families, please dial: 423-498-6744 Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

HCS Continued Learning Plan

Our district is working on contingency plans for continued learning by providing access to student assignments here and links to our online educational tools here. These strategies will be invaluable as we seek to expand our learning opportunities available on days we must close schools due to inclement weather or for other community-wide reasons.

Student Meals

We are committed to supporting our students who are in need during the closure by providing them meals. Click here to view the details.

Health Experts Suggestions

Health officials recommend everyday preventative actions to help halt the spread of respiratory diseases. The school district is reinforcing these measures at school, and we know you are helping us with this at home.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. This means maintain a distance of at least six (6) feet.
  • Do not gather in groups of 10 or more.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you or your child are sick. A fever must be absent for 24-hours with no fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, use your elbow and not your hands to cover the sneeze or cough.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

The district will continue to monitor the situation and adhere to the direction of our professional health partners.
