Today’s #HCSHeroes Spotlight is Peter Schmurr, a coding teacher at Tyner Academy. Mr. Schmurr joined the school this year to add a coding pathway for students in the EPB Institute of Information Technology and Networking.

Mr. Schmurr’s classroom is an unusual environment this school year because he is teaching from home exclusively. Although he is not able to be physically present with his students, Mr. Schmurr is finding creative ways to engage and help them excel.

“In some ways, I have been able to engage more effectively with students through the online environment than would have been the case in a traditional classroom setting,” said Mr. Schmurr. “For example, students who would like individual assistance but may not speak up in a group setting are often more at ease in a one-on-one breakout session.”

Despite the challenges this school year has brought, Mr. Schmurr has found joy in the learning opportunities it has presented for him as an educator.

“There are many excellent online simulations and interactive exercises designed for or which can be adapted to computer science topics,” said Mr. Schmurr. “It has been my experience that difficulty brings growth and I fully believe that education will have improved by the time we are through this crisis.”

The efforts of our teachers and staff are truly heroic, and we are proud to have people like Mr. Schmurr on our team to support our students!
