Assistant Principal

Sarah was born and raised in Vidalia, Georgia.  She is the youngest of seven children. She attended Vidalia High School where she participated in various activities including softball, basketball, cheerleading, Student Government Association, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and served as a DARE Role Model.  As a senior, Sarah was named both Miss Vidalia High School and Homecoming Queen. 

After graduating from high school, Sarah attended the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology PreK-4. While at UTC, Sarah pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  She also participated in Kappa Delta Pi, an honor society for Educators.  Through both sororities, Sarah served her community in the areas of education, family, finance, and leadership.

Although Sarah began working with children while in college, her first teaching job began in the spring of 2006, where she fulfilled an interim position in a Title I school as a first grade teacher. Later that year, Sarah accepted a permanent position in an inner city school where she worked for three years as a kindergarten teacher.  It was at Clifton Hills Elementary where Sarah discovered her passion for improving the lives of students through compassion, dedication, and education.  This experience humbled Sarah and she knew that she wanted to make a greater impact on all students.  Sarah began mentoring and guiding other teachers by allowing them to observe in her classroom and working on school goals by leading committees that would impact the quality of instruction for the entire school.  Sarah knew that she wanted to be a leader and positioned herself to do so while working at Clifton Hills.  She earned both a Masters of Education degree and Educational Specialist degree within her three years at Clifton Hills. Sarah began sharing her expertise at conferences such as the National and Regional Title I Conference and the annual Reading First Conference. 

In 2009, Sarah became curious and decided to take a position at Normal Park Museum Magnet School where she was exposed to diversity, family partnerships, and creative approaches to teaching.  The high expectations set by her administrators and the consistency in providing a high quality education to all students empowered Sarah to continue to become a life-long learner and encouraged her to continue to share her expertise with others. 

In 2010, Sarah took a Model Classroom Position at a rural school.  Here, Sarah spent half of her day teaching students in 4th grade and the other half of the day coaching teachers in their classrooms.  This position afforded Sarah the opportunity to continue to use best practices as well as coach teachers through the same strategies and practices that she found to be successful for student achievement.

At the end of the school year, the district’s coaching model changed.  Sarah became a Lead Literacy Teacher for Hamilton County Schools.  Her experiences in urban, magnet, and rural school settings had prepared her for the next step in making a greater impact on educators and students across the district.  Sarah served both Title and Non-Title schools.  She coached teachers, and provided professional development to coaches, teachers, and administrators.  She provided ongoing support and facilitated literacy labs at priority schools.  During this time, Sarah participated in a year-long program called Leadership Fellows, which is provided by the Public Education Foundation (PEF). In this program, a group of selected educators engaged in monthly activities that prepared them to be a leader in the Hamilton County school system.  Because of this program, Sarah had the opportunity to shadow administrators in Hamilton County as well as in New York City.  This program also equipped Sarah with the necessary tools for working in turn-around schools and setting school improvement goals. 

One school in particular, Woodmore Elementary, ignited a spark in her and it was here that Sarah knew a change was needed and could be done.  In 2013, she accepted a full-time coaching position at Woodmore Elementary.  Because the school was an Innovative School (iZone), Sarah new there was a lot of work to be done, but knew the reward would be well worth it.  For the next 3 years, Sarah worked relentlessly on improving the school through coaching and support.  In her many roles as a leader in the school, Sarah worked closely alongside the directors and administrators to make instructional decisions that would move the school from the bottom 5%.  She used data to identify the school’s strengths and weaknesses and developed strategic frameworks for instructional practices in Literacy. She developed assessments and tools for teachers to monitor student achievement, and used a gradual-release coaching model to guide teachers and students to success.  Sarah led the way for implementing Understanding by Design (UBD) and Project-Based Learning (PBL).  She planned successful family nights, literacy expos, and parent workshops as a way of consistently engaging parents in student learning. She developed partnerships with the community and local museums to receive over $20,000 for the students and teachers at Woodmore, which provided technology, resources, and learning expeditions.  Sarah started the Woodmore Scholars Chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society. Sarah also served as the Elementary Literacy Facilitator for the Innovation Zone in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Education.  In addition, she served as a Core Coach for the state of Tennessee, which allowed her to provide training in early literacy and intervention to educators across the state.  Sarah received a Fund For Teachers grant provided by a partnership between Fund for Teachers and the Public Education Foundation. This grant afforded her the opportunity to travel to Europe and study fairy tales and folktales. 

Sarah is committed to the students and teachers in Hamilton County.  Now, as an Assistant Principal at Brown Academy, she desires to continue improving the quality of education for all students and serving as an advocate for teachers. She looks forward to contributing to the economic, educational, and social success of the Chattanooga community through her role as a leader in Hamilton County.  Sarah is also proud to be a part of the 2016 class of Leadership Chattanooga sponsored by the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.
